Ymddiriedolaeth Plas Gunter Mansion Trust Community Archaeology Project

This June, Black Mountains Archaeology is delighted to be working in partnership with Ymddiriedolaeth Plas Gunter Mansion Trust to deliver an exciting Community Archaeology Project as part of the National Lottery Heritage Fund-supported restoration of Plas Gunter Mansion in the heart of Abergavenny.

Plas Gunter Mansion is one of Abergavenny’s most important historic buildings. This remarkable Grade II* listed townhouse has stood on Cross Street for more than 350 years and is currently undergoing an ambitious programme of restoration and conservation. The wider heritage project has already included archaeological investigations undertaken by Black Mountains Archaeology, alongside detailed historic building surveys carried out by ArchaeoDomus Ltd.

From 15th to 19th June 2026, local schools, volunteers and members of the public will have the opportunity to become archaeologists for the day and help uncover the hidden history of the mansion.

The community excavation will focus on two archaeological trenches located to the rear of the property. These trenches have been carefully positioned to investigate significant discoveries made during previous archaeological work. One trench will extend from a 2015 excavation undertaken by GGAT (now Heneb), where a section of a Roman road was uncovered. The second trench will investigate an area where Black Mountains Archaeology recently revealed substantial masonry walls associated with the mansion’s historic kitchen wing, together with Post-medieval cobbled surfaces and related structures.

The project is about far more than just digging. Throughout the week participants will have the opportunity to take part in a range of engaging heritage activities, including a historical treasure hunt around Abergavenny and a hands-on Archaeological Illustration Workshop. Participants will be able to handle genuine Roman and Post-medieval artefacts from Wales and learn how archaeologists record and illustrate finds.

The first three days of the project will welcome local primary schools, giving hundreds of young people the chance to experience archaeology first-hand. On Thursday 18th and Friday 19th June, the excavation will be opened to adult volunteers, with up to 20 participants able to take part each day.

Participation is completely free of charge thanks to funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. No previous archaeological experience is required, just enthusiasm, curiosity and a willingness to get involved!

If you would like to take part in one of the adult volunteer days, please contact the Plas Gunter Mansion Trust at info@plasguntermansion.org.uk with your name and contact details. An information pack and photography consent form will be provided upon registration.

Whether you are interested in archaeology, local history, heritage conservation, or simply trying something new, this is a unique opportunity to help uncover the hidden stories beneath one of Abergavenny’s most important historic buildings.

We look forward to welcoming you to Plas Gunter Mansion and sharing this exciting archaeological adventure with the local community.
